The HRM-Swim is designed specifically for swimmers or athletes who spend a great deal of their training in the pool (it’s also compatible with open water swims). In fact, the chlorine-resistant strap was engineered to stay put when you push off the pool wall.
The HRM-Tri is a strap designed with triathletes in mind who divide their focus among swimming, biking and running. In addition to some swimming data (Garmin assumes that your swimming specifically for a triathlon and gives you open-water swimming metrics rather than pool-based data), you get a wide range of advanced running and cycling dynamics (cadence, stride length, ground contact time, etc)
We would suggest the bundle for the athlete who really wants to focus on his/her swimming but also participates in triathlons (or plans to) OR a triathlete who wants to train specifically for the swimming leg in a pool (the HRM-TRI is designed more for open-water swimming and is not chemical resistant). That way, you aren’t compromising your swimming data, but you can use the HRM-TRI when you want to focus on your runs or cycling.
Sort of. It tracks your underwater data and then delivers this data to compatible devices like your FR735XT or Fenix 3 once you’re out of the water. In other words, you can track your underwater heart rate but you just can’t see this data while you’re underwater.
You just start overriding your oldest data.
